The 10th Annual Austin City Limits Festival is Sept. 16-18 in Zilker Park. With Lolla celebrating it's 20th Anniversary a month earlier and Bonnaroo turning 10 in June, this year all the festivals are blowing out the candles and hopefully engaging in a game of one-upmanship with their respective lineups. The 20th Anniversary Lolla lineup doesn't exactly blow me away so let's hope C3 is just saving it for Austin this year, Last year's headliners included Phish, Muse and The Eagles. Please share your rumors, speculation and wishes in the comments section.
According to Chicago Tribune Music Insider and long-time Lolla scenester Greg Kot, folks can expect to see Foo Fighters, Eminem and Muse [confirmed again today 4/5/11 on Twitter] headlining in Grant Park come August. Also, he added that Best Coast, Girl Talk, Crystal Castles, Lykke Li will be there as well. As Lolla is a three-day festival featuring dualing headliners on opposite sides of the park, three more headlining acts will be included in addition to these rumored confirmations. Gonna need a lot more than those three to get me back up to Chicago for this year's festival (not to knock Eminem or Muse, both of which played great headlining shows at the Voodoo Experience in 2009 and 2010 respectively). Been dying to return since 2009 and I expect for the 20th Anniversary there will be (as usual), a few headlining acts that were around when the festival first got it's legs. Also, with both releasing their own albums and a collaboration this year, perhaps Kanye West is a possibility to also land on the bill this summer. The official, confirmed, non-speculatory lineup will be released in April.
On the heels of last Tuesday's release of the title track to the forthcoming My Morning Jacket album Circuital (Out 5/31 - ATO Records), MMJ released "Octoplasm", a Miles Davis-meets-Grateful Dead freeform jazzercise from way out in leftfield. Completely different from anything the band has released to this point and accompanied with a message revealing that there is plenty more unexpected weirdness to come from this Roll Call series.

Listen to Octoplasm:

“My Morning Jacket would like to welcome all those who join the new MMJ Roll Call fan club into their much talked about and highly controversial “Self-Hypnosis Series” as well. The Self-Hypnosis Series will begin an exploration into the core of each individual heart, mind, body, and soul that joins the Roll Call fan club.

Based on a desire to help each individual fan reach a state of emotional bliss, a new algorithm was recently developed at Removador HQ. It can sense listeners temperature and emotional climate at the time of listening-thru any listening device, be it speakers or headphones, and cater a listening experience truly unique for each listener.

MMJ will carefully handcraft and carve pieces of music that will provide a vehicle for the listener to enter a new gateway of self exploration and understanding based on their current state of mind at the time of each listen. The Self-Hypnosis Series will start with a piece entitled “Octoplasm” which will be available via download immediately upon joining Roll Call. New titles in the Self-Hypnosis series will appear randomly, or on a strict schedule and will be available only to Roll Call members. We hope you are to enjoy!”
Wesley Hodgeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16321563725182929676noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5420933074410482874.post-26338721501898422952011-04-14T13:13:00.000-05:002011-04-14T13:13:59.257-05:00Glastonbury 2011 Lineup Revealed

Mumford & Sons -- Appearing at this year's festival
This month local indie rock duo the Generationals are the LMB NOLA Artist of the Month. With their new album Actor Caster out now on Park The Van Records (for starters, check "Yours Forever", "Greenleaf" (below) and "Please Be It"), a lengthy tour getting kicked off this week and a stop in New Orleans for the final day at Jazz Fest, the buzz is growing louder for these guys. The Generationals are New Orleans' response to internationally-renowned electro-infused indie pop bands like Peter Bjorn & John and MGMT. The indie rockers are in rare company around these parts as purveyors of radio-ready sunny afternoon pop tunes more catered towards the college radio dial and tastemaking outlets like Pitchfork, Stereogum and Paste than just about any other local act.

The band is currently out on two-month tour in support of the new record alongside Ra Ra Riot, Oh No Oh My and Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr at varying legs of the tour. Also, the Generationals are making an appearance at Jazz Fest on the festival's final day (May 8) on the Lagniappe Stage from 3:10-4:10. To download two of the band's new tracks, enter your e-mail address below. Check out the interview with Grant and Ted below where they discuss the genesis of the band name, their label Park the Van, influences and a memorable childhood trip to Jazz Fest.

Live Music Blog: NOLA - Generationals is a pretty stellar name, it carries a certain majesty and importance to it - how did you guys come up with the band name and please also answer the following: The Generationals are the _________ [Fill in the blank] of our generation.

Grant: Most epic appreciators of BBQ.

Ted: We were recording our first record Con Law in Washington D.C. over the Summer of 2008. It was the Summer before the presidential election and you would hear the word "generational" alot in the news coverage of the election, in the context of issues being split down generational lines. Grant just had the idea to pluralize it and I was like O.K. sure, lets be Generationals.

More after the Jump

Tell me about the genesis of the band, I understand you guys were in a different band together before deciding to form the Generationals. How has your sound evolved from the days in Eames Era?

Ted: Yeah we went to school in Baton Rouge and started a band up there. I'd say our sound evolved pretty steadily and maybe logically. We never consciously moved in any new direction, we've always just tried to write short good pop songs.

Excuse the personal anecdote -- After spending 6 years in Nashville myself, New Orleans, if it has one musical depravity, is a lack of platforms for bands in the nebulous "indie rock" milieu compared to other markets of a similar size. Seems to be changing with things like Foburg Fest and places like Republic, but New Orleans to me still gravitates largely towards the more traditional jam and roots bands. Do you guys see this as an advantage being in such rare company as opposed to being one of 1000 indie bands in another city (as opposed to if you were out of Austin or Brooklyn)?

Grant: I definitely do not see it as an advantage. You want to be surrounded by other people and bands who are working in a similar genre because it forces you to try harder. We've been in situations like that before with a few other bands where we really felt like we needed to step it up to be the better band. I think that kind of competitiveness really pushes everyone to be better, that's how music scenes start I think. I think being kind of an anomaly in New Orleans helped us get some attention in New Orleans, but in the long run, I think it's better to have to compete to distinguish yourself from a really crowded field. But I love New Orleans, we're from New Orleans so it's not something we ever thought about strategically anyway. It's our hometown.

Three bands and/or albums you've been listening to recently.

Telekinesis- 12 Desperate Straight Lines, Nick Lowe- Labor of Lust, Floating Action- Desert Etiquette

Your tour passes through New Orleans for an appearance at the final day of Jazz Fest so the big question is:
Neville Brothers or Radiators?

Grant: Neville Brothers 1000%. Their impact on New Orleans is so huge. Those guys are the Mount Rushmore of New Orleans music, especially Art.

What's your favorite Jazz Fest memory as a fan? As a performer?

Grant: This is an easy one for me. I was about 9 or 10, my dad took me to Jazz Fest to see Van Morrison and we were both pretty excited, we are both bigtime fans. We're standing in one of those gigantic crowds of like 10,000 people in front of the Ray Ban stage, at the time that was the big stage that the headliners played. We were waiting for what seemed like a couple of hours and the crowd started to get a little restless. There was a group of about 5 college-age guys right in front of us, they were not trying to wait anymore. And they were staggeringly drunk, they could barely stand up. They started yelling at the stage "Come onnn! Van Mingo Mungo! Lingo Van Mungo! Lingo Van Mungo!!" They just kept doing it incessantly for like 30 minutes and my dad and I are directly behind them in this giant crowd, nowhere to move. It went from being really funny to being annoying and then finally just unbearable. Finally Van came out but these dudes were still hollering at full volume. We couldn't take it so we ended up leaving after only one or two songs. To this day my dad and I yell "Lingo Van Mungo" at each other at random times.

How did you guys end up getting on Park the Van?

Grant: We made our first record and had no idea what we were going to do with it. We had just gotten it back from mastering and literally later that same day, I went with my friend to a bar called Mid City Yacht Club which is a dive in Mid City not far from where Chris Watson, the president of PTV, lives. I knew what he looked like because I had seen his picture in a magazine article or something. I just introduced myself to him, we had some mutual friends, like The Spinto Band. We talked for a minute and I went out to the car and got the CD of Con Law and gave it to him. They immediately signed us to a $1 billion* record deal.

*false

Two Parts -- What are some of your biggest influences -- a. modern and b. older acts (bands still together and older bands)?

For Actor-Caster, I would cite The Zombies, The The, ELO, Tom Petty.

Current bands we like include Hacienda, Dr. Dog, The Walkmen, The Spinto Band, Ghostfinger, Phoenix, Passion Pit, MGMT, Floating Action, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Telekinesis.

Tell us about the recording process for Actor-Caster.

Grant: It was cool. We went back to DC which is where we recorded Con Law. We worked with Dan Black who has a cool studio there that we like. We recorded the entire month of July last summer. It was excruciatingly hot, we rarely left the house. We just hacked away at it, a little bit a day almost every day for that month and that was it. For that reason I think the lyrical ideas are a little more consistent from song to song.

Bonus Question - Your label mates Dr. Dog are god's gift to modern rock music, any stories to tell about playing/hanging out with those guys?

Grant: Those dudes are cool. Their original drummer, Juston Stens, has been playing with us a lot this year and he is a really interesting guy and a terrific drummer. He is an idea machine. The other guys we don't know really well. We opened for them once in New Orleans and they seemed like nice guys. I'm a fan too, I've probably seen them 5 times. I remember meeting them, we were always really impressed with their vocals. We are way behind in that respect, we are still kind of learning how to sing correctly, so we had all these ideas and theories about what we should be doing to get our voices ready for a show. Tea with lemon, honey, gargle water, whatever. I remember we asked them "What do you guys do, what's your routine to get your voice ready to sing?" They looked at us like idiots, they were like "We don't do anything we just sing." Then they proceeded to chainsmoke like 50 cigarettes. We were like "Oh."
So who is getting added? I'd like to think there's at least one big name (for some reason I would think nostalgia act) yet to be added - perhaps Paul Simon? For the comedy Tent, my guess is that Lonely Island may be making their first large-scale appearance and headlining the Comedy Acts. Would also love to see Fleet Foxes, Toro Y Moi and Futurebirds added to the lineup. Please list who you think will/should be added when the additions are announced later this week.

Note: Yes, Galactic has officially taken over this site. They are the Artist of the Month after all. To download the Lundi Gras show, click here

Galactic. New Orleans. Lundi Gras. I would like to preface this review with the fact that I have only made it completely through Galactic’s Lundi Gras show once – and that my 2011 effort was not a full one, with Lundi Gras and Fat Tuesday separated by a much-needed three hour nap. Usually with the Monday night show, the full day's partying plus an 8 hour marathon of music means that some people just can't make it through the whole evening. So if you do get shut out (and can wait until the wee hours of the evening), you usually can stroll up after 3 and buy a ticket at the door.

The mystic of Mardi Gras runs strong around the Galactic experience, take for example the fact that I bought and listened to a NOLA funk compilation featuring Chuck Carbo's "Can I Be Your Squeeze" just hours before heading down to Tip's - and lo and behold, at the exact moment I walk in to the full-on 4:30 a.m. freak out at Tip's the next morning - they are covering the song. Coincidence? Probably. But coincidence is a big part of the magic that surrounds the whole Mardi Gras experience, and that's what makes it all so special. After finding my spot on the floor, Robert Walter made his way to the stage for a funky B3 infused "Live Wire". Corey Henry then proceeded to crush Juvenile’s verses on “From The Corner To The Block” (as well as having the entire crowd gettin' low "Shout" style) and the band took their last break before the final push into the morning.

The third set was simply perfect. “Doublewide > Whole Lotta Love” to start things off, a big "Ho Na Nae" with Papa Mali, Trixie Slaughter (Rebirth) and Ben Jaffe from Preservation Hall Brass Band (it’s not everyday that you get to watch a Tuba player and Rob Mercurio slam through a bass-off at 6:00 in the morning) and then, in perfect form, finished the evening with a sauntering “Quiet Please” before sending us out into the day light hours. I went home and woke up a friend on the couch for a bike ride equipped with Bloody’s, Screwdrivers – and finally Zulu. By 9:00 in the morning, the day was already one of the best of the year. Much thanks to the Tipitina’s crew, the Galactic folks, and everyone involved that makes the Lundi Gras thing happen year after year. I highly recommend it.

Oh yeah, I heard Orgone wasn’t bad at all.

Also, the band has approved the circulation of a crisp SBD rip by one of our new friends, John-Ryan Hevron (a NOLA native currently stationed in Brooklyn, NY), for download here. Please enjoy the recording and support live music!
Double Album? Triple Album? Have we seen all of it? If there is another one, what will it sound like? Are they gonna land at Bonnaroo X in a spaceship and make a surprise appearance after the Sunday headliner?
And Now For Something Completely Different

Not really sure how many mash-up artists have incorporated live instrumentation to supplement their work on the 1′s and 2′s, but this concept seems genius and will undoubtedly compel those like me who aren’t especially keen on the mashup genre to take a closer look at the explosive (and no longer faddish or new) genre. The effect of these shows should work both ways, and hopefully some dance club junkies will gain a whole new appreciation for some of the local musical talent that will be featured every other week at Quiz’ HoB parties. Regardless, this sounds like the ultimate recipe for dance party shenanigans and a good excuse to get downtown on a Friday night. I’m already sweatin’ just thinking about it.

Details: Starting this Friday, DJ Jermaine Quiz will be hosting a Mashup NOLA party and feature a revolving door of local musicians dropping by. The first lineup will include Derrick Freeman (Kermit Ruffins’ BBQ Swingers) on drums, Kirk Joseph playing tuba (Dirty Dozen Brass Band), saxophonist James Martin (Ernie Vincent), and guest MC M@Peoples. Release notes for Road Trips Vol.4 No. 2 as written by Blair Jackson (Author of Garcia: An American Life, Grateful Dead Gear & Grateful Dead: The Music Never Stopped):

“You all know about the glory that was 1987. A year after we almost lost Jerry to his diabetic coma in the summer of ’86, the Dead were back, Jerry was the phoenix risen, and the band was bigger than ever: There was “Touch of Grey,” In the Dark, the stadium tour with Dylan, a huge influx of new Heads; it was good times all around, for sure. The band was revived and a new day dawned!

But when I interviewed Garcia for my old Dead ’zine, The Golden Road, the following autumn—1988—he revealed that he felt like he was just then finally catching up to his old, pre-coma self, “That is to say, having access to everything I know about playing. I’m getting to that point where it’s physically as comfortable… [and] feeling there.”

Indeed, 1988 was a fantastic year for the Dead, with some of the band’s most explosive and energetic playing, as the whole band rose to meet Garcia in his return to absolute peak form. This “high” washed over into 1989—a year that has been extensively documented with official releases in part because the band recorded so many shows on multi-track tape and multi-camera video (Downhill From Here, Truckin’, Up to Buffalo, Nightfall of Diamonds, the recent Formerly the Warlocks box). But 1988 has, curiously, been largely ignored, save for a single official download-only release many years ago of the epic 3/27/88 Hampton show. What gives? It’s certainly no reflection of the quality of the music from ’88, which most Dead Heads would agree was almost uniformly strong. You’ll find many folks singing the praises of runs at Kaiser, the Centrum, Irvine, Alpine, Frost, the Greek, Alpine, Oxford Plains in Maine, Laguna Seca… just solid stuff all around. Gets me tingly just thinkin’ about it!

Well, we haven’t forgotten ’88—far from it—and this edition of Road Trips (Vol. 4, No. 2) shows you why. It offers up the entire April 1, 1988 concert from the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, NJ (maybe you just called it “the Meadowlands” back in the day), plus the entire second set and a few first set highlights from the previous night’s show, March 31. That April Fools show is a real barn-burner, with a first set that includes a “double-opener” of high-octane versions of “Mississippi Half-Step” and “Jack Straw,” a rare and nearly perfect take on “To Lay Me Down” (played for just the second time since 1983), followed directly by the second (and final) GD-only version of Dylan’s “Ballad of a Thin Man.” Less than a year after their six-show jaunt with the Mysterious One, Weir & Co. give the classic tune an impressively emotional workout; in fact, it’s hard to discern why it didn’t remain in the Dead’s repertoire after this evening. That first set also includes nearly manic versions of both “Cumberland” and “Deal.” Blazing!

There’s no letup in Set Two, either, as the band tears through what looks on paper like a fairly conventional set list, but in execution is far from that. “China Cat” > “Rider,” “Estimated” > “Eyes” and “The Other One” > “Wharf Rat” all sound fresh and alive, and seem to glow with fiery embers thanks to Garcia’s speedy and imaginative runs—basically the guy is on fire!

A few nuggets from the 3/31 first set are tucked onto the back side of Disc One—including a superb “Let It Grow”—and then that night’s second set fills the other disc, and it’s another rockin’ affair loaded with favorites: A “Scarlet” > “Fire” nearly the equal of the famous Hampton version just four nights earlier, a fine “Terrapin,” and a post-“Drums” that never lets up as it moves from “Goin’ Down the Road” into “Miracle,” “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” the coda of “Hey Jude,” and “Watchtower” in the closing slot. The encore is another Dylan tune, “Heaven’s Door”—a perfect grace note for a raucous and exciting show. We should also note that the “Rhythm Devils” and “Space” portions of each show are also fantastically varied and interesting—in the spring of ’89 Garcia will be the last band member to “go MIDI,” so this is provides a glimpse of the more “pure” Garcia “Space” tones.

Intrigued? You should be! It’s hot stuff from beginning to end. As is customary, the original recordings (in this case by Dan Healy) have been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman, and our art team of Scott McDougall and Steve Vance have once again come up with a stunning package to entertain your eyeballs. This time out, Dead scribe Gary Lambert has contributed a splendid essay for the booklet, which true-to-form, is also loaded with period photos of The Boys in action. You can find the complete song lists for all three discs, plus ordering information simply by pressing this magic button! What a way to start the New Year!” - Blair JacksonWesley Hodgeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16321563725182929676noreply@blogger.com1
