Bonnaroo 2011 Lineup Rumors, Speculation - UPDATE 2.2.2011

Bonnaroooooooooooooooooo

Wanderlust abounds this time of year...
NOTE: New additions to rumor mill/speculation in Green, [Rumored] Confirmations will be in red.

The yearly celebration of Bonnaroo has been on the mind ever since the festival officially announced the dates for this June's 10th edition. The festival is expected announce it's lineup sometime next week (released in 2010 on 2/9). Not that the festival needs something like a big anniversary to pull out all the stops, but if the transformative 5th Anniversary was any indication (2006-- my personal favorite lineup, featuring Radiohead, Beck, My Morning Jacket, G.R.A.B., and Oysterhead), this year AC Entertainment and Superfly will be pulling out all the stops. If you need MORE BONNAROO in your life and/or a quick frame of reference of what the festival has been like in year's past, click this link for a timeline of the first 9 years of this incredible and unique event. Finally, here is my completely speculatory list of artists who I see as possibilities to appear on the farm in Manchester from June 9-12 (one can wish, wonder, and wander towards the Good Road):

NOTE: With regards to Radiohead returning for the first time since '06, I just don't see it happening but will pray to Gary Chardonnay nightly that I am proven wrong

Eminem (pretty confident he will be there this year)
Daft Punk (reportedly going back on tour this summer, on hiatus since 2007)
David Gilmour & Roger Waters (Appearing together at a mystery date on Roger Waters' The Wall Tour very soon, one can hope. One of these guys would more than suffice) and/or The Rolling Stones (Looks like hopes of a Rolling Stones festival-hopping summer are on the rocks, due to a rift caused by Keith Richards book -- 2/10/2011) -- Click link to read more.
U2 (making up their 360 Tour this summer, however, if Bonnaroo has a sturdy radius clause for headliners, I think this one is out of the question b/c of an early July show already scheduled at Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville. Could be wrong there but seems unlikely that Bonnaroo would sign on a headliner playing in the area a few weeks later).
Dr. John (Featuring the Original METERS) -- Not likely if unconfirmed this late in the game, but the festival gets it's name from a Dr. John song featuring the Meters as the backing band and it's been mentioned.
Red Hot Chili Peppers (Reportedly getting back together in '11 minus retired guitarist John Frusciante) or Elton John or David Bowie or Neil Young
Robert Plant and His Band of Joy  (CONFIRMED)
Foo Fighters (hope not, but could see it happening with new album, heavy touring in '11. Would be a slight upgrade from KoL '10, Jack Johnson '08; appearing at the Hangout Fest a few weeks earlier, also rumored to be headlining Lollapalooza in August, so they are definitely putting themselves out there this summer -- 2/11/2011.
Gorillaz (reportedly putting out yet another album next year; also, Gorillaz are not breaking up)
Buffalo Springfield (Link to speculation in Nashville Examiner)
Lauryn Hill (performing at Jazz Fest for the first time in years)
Jack White w/ Danger Mouse (ROME project, being released in May)
Rush (Touring North America this Spring and Summer)
Paul Simon (Headlining Hangout Fest May 20-22, fairly likely I would think)
Jonsi
Dr. Dre w/ Guests (since Kanye in '08 and Jay-Z last year, it could make sense with Detox coming out early-2011). Performing at the Grammys.
Big Boi (a suggestive RT if there ever was one)
The Arcade Fire (headlining Jazz Fest and Coachella, would round out quite an unprecedented trifecta)
Furthur (No member of The Dead has played at Bonnaroo since 2008)
My Morning Jacket (set to release a new record in the first half of 2011, have not appeared at Bonnaroo since 2008, late night What or Which Stage would be likely, would literally be in a catatonic state of shock if the lineup is announced and MMJ is not on there.)
Black Keys (could be a select back-to-back choice)
Widespread Panic (also have not appeared since 2008, a long time for the band holding the record for most headlining appearances. Also, 2011 is the band's 25th Anniversary and last run until an indefinite hiatus)
Manu Chao (please bring back)
Avett Brothers (even though they were there last year, new album for 2011 just announced so could make a repeat visit).
Cee-Lo
Wanda Jackson w/ Jack White
Fleet Foxes
Black Star
The Faces
Rihanna
Lonely Island
Nicki Minaj
Robbie Robertson and Friends (New album out in 2011, first in 13 years)
The String Cheese Incident (have not done a proper tour since 2007 or appeared at Bonnaroo since that summer.)
The Avalanches
Wilco
Massive Attack
Gregg Allman and his Blues Band
Chemical Brothers
Wiz Khalifa
Dispatch
Zach Galifianakis (with Hangover 2 coming out weeks before, could be this year's big comedic headliner).
Iggy Pop & The Stooges
Down
Mastodon
Kylesa
Rammstein
Florence & The Machine
Lissie
STS9
Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi
A Tribe Called Quest
Umphrey's McGee
Delta Spirit (Confirmed/Sorta)
Les Claypool (in some form - Primus)
Particle
AIR
Os Mutantes
Fleet Foxes
Janelle Monae (if Big Boi is there, definitely expect her to appear, would be the perfect late night act)
moe.
Broken Bells
MGMT
Yo La Tengo
North Mississippi All-Stars ([excellent] new album released last week -- 2/11/2011)
Justin Townes Earle - 2/11/2011 (Also appearing at Jazz Fest)
Tom Tom Club
Hot Chip
Deerhunter
Yeasayer
Bela Fleck & The Flecktones
Two Door Cinema Club
Shpongle
Trampled By Turtles
Bonobo
Tame Impala
Cold War Kids
Galactic
M. Ward
Truth and Salvage Co.
James Blake (2/11/2011)
Easy Star All-Stars
Dead Confederate
Warpaint
Anders Osborne
Toro Y Moi (Thursday?)
Smith Westerns (Thursday?)
Futurebirds (Troo?)
Growlers
Moon Taxi
Lance Herbstrong
The White Stripes ( : ( )

No good basis, but maybe one day??

Outkast (if it's on the Internet it could be troo)
Black Sabbath (Ozzy has been talking about getting the old band back together and recording a new album)
Talking Heads (everyone is healthy and alive, so why not bury the hatchet?)
Some formation of Bob Dylan & Levon Helm
Rage Against the Machine (the time has come)
Radiohead (doubt they would do it again)
Neil Young solo

Commenter Wishes/Speculations/Confirmations
The Cure
My Chemical Romance
John Legend and the Roots
Paul Simon
Mumford and Sons (Confirmed return?)
Cage the Elephant (Confirmed)
Modest Mouse
Devendra Banhart
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Would love to see them return. Think that was a once in a lifetime appearance.

Rage Against the Machine? Pretty please.

I don't think you really want to see Ozzy at 'Roo. He was once great, but these days, not so much...

Anonymous said...

I agree Cal. I saw him at Voodoo and chose to not mention him in the review. It was embarassing.

This would be my first year going and honestly any of those bands would make it worth while. I'd love to see Waters/Gilmour, MGMT, Flaming Lips, Rush, Bowie, RHCP, Phish, Zach Galifianakis, or Deerhunter. Any of those would be great! Hope they do it big for their 10th year!

The Cure! The Cure! The Cure! And, Radiohead, Mos Def, John Legend+The Roots, My Chemical Romance

Anonymous said...

Paul Simon, Lady Gaga, the Faces (w/ Rod!), Elton John & Leon Russell, Paul McCartney, ... Guns N' Roses reunion?

I'm pushing it now, but I can't wait to see who's going to make the sunburn worth it this year!

My bet is that Rage Against The Machine is booked because they just played three shows in south america in October of 2010.
Oct 9th - Sao Paulo , Brazil - SWU Festival
Oct 11th - Santiago, Chile - Fazenda Maquinaria Festival
Oct 13th - Buenos Aires, Argentina - Costanera Sur

(info collected from (www.RATM.com)

My prediction is Led Zeppelin. Then we can also get Robert Plant & Band of Joy (and maybe Alison Kraus?), Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of the Stone Age, and Foo Figthers.

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals

Anonymous said...

You can write down and bet on Munford and Sons with David Mayfield playing :)

Anonymous said...

The time has indeed come for more RAGE against the machine, saw them in 07' at Rock the bells headlining aside Wu Tang, I understand providing South America with a dose of live rage was needed but North America is desperately in need of the revolutionary fuel they provide.

Anonymous said...

Pleaseeee bring back Thievery Corporation!! And Bonobo and Massive Attack should be there too. Maybe a little Metric too :)

Luke said...

gimme some Toots and the Maytals!

A.Casey said...

would love to see Radiohead again. Mumford & Sons is a lock. the Lips were there last year, I seriously doubt they'll make an appearance two years in a row, though I'd enjoy it. a Waters/Gilmour combo would be a dream come true, but I just don't see it happening... time for McCartney to hit the 'Roo. Rage would be sweet, and a lot of the others mentioned here. to the commenter (Kned) so opposed to jam bands - you do realize that Bonnaroo, while surprisingly & excellently eclectic, is primarily and at it's heart a hippie-fest, right? Jam bands are the heart of Bonnaroo, indie rock is the soul. Everything else just fills in gaps.

Anonymous said...

JACK JOHNSON!!!! He was awesome before bring him back!!!

Anonymous said...

Uh Huh Her would be really cool to see, they've never been there but should.

Anonymous said...

holy fuck.. if this is anywhere near correct. i will shit. mounds.

DEADMAU5!

I'll only go if Radiohead or Sigur Ros plays. Explosions in the sky would be nice. Mumford and Sons was the best show I saw last year (with The National being a close second. Followed by Phoenix). Bon Iver might do it for me too, or Grizzly Bear (two years ago they were the ones I most looked forward to). Don't care about MGMT, or any band with Ben Harper in it. Bonnaroo's only been cool since they went away from being exclusively about jam bands, and will only match up to the likes of Coachella when they distance themselves even further. The commenter talking about moe and all those other crap bands was absolutely right. I think moe played like a 3 or 4 hour set last time...are you freaking kidding me? I don't even think anybody was watching them, and if they were it was because they were avoiding the rain by standing underneath one of the big tents.

Not too much truth in any of this speculation, alot of what you guys want isn't logistically practical . Sawry maybe 1 or 2 of the head acts u guys are taking about ( daft punk + outkast) seem even remotly possible. RATM at Bonnaroo? Please children that would be lame.

EDWARD SHARPE AND THE MAGNETIC ZEROS! <3

I'd love to see the Black Keys again. Playing last year makes them unlikely, but they've blown up since then. And they moved to Nashville, so if they're asked and aren't already booked, I bet they'd do it. Related: Jessica Lea Mayfield, especially if TBK and David Mayfield play. I can dream, no?
I'm expecting Widespread Panic.
Paul Simon? Awesome.

Anonymous said...

Any chance to see Paul play live.... I think my heart might explode with happiness!

Aaron said...

David Bowie would be fucking epic.

And considering she's "supposedly" finishing up a new album (finally), I wouldn't rule out Amy Winehouse (that is if she pulls her shit together)
