Radiohead Conspiracy Theories Flying Re: King of Limbs
Double Album? Triple Album? Have we seen all of it? If there is another one, what will it sound like? Are they gonna land at Bonnaroo X in a spaceship and make a surprise appearance after the Sunday headliner?
Please share your thoughts about this atmosphere-bending new release in the comments section.

Mashup NOLA at HoB Presented by Jermaine Quiz
This also appears on Live Music Blog: NOLA
And Now For Something Completely Different
Not really sure how many mash-up artists have incorporated live instrumentation to supplement their work on the 1′s and 2′s, but this concept seems genius and will undoubtedly compel those like me who aren’t especially keen on the mashup genre to take a closer look at the explosive (and no longer faddish or new) genre. The effect of these shows should work both ways, and hopefully some dance club junkies will gain a whole new appreciation for some of the local musical talent that will be featured every other week at Quiz’ HoB parties. Regardless, this sounds like the ultimate recipe for dance party shenanigans and a good excuse to get downtown on a Friday night. I’m already sweatin’ just thinking about it.
Details: Starting this Friday, DJ Jermaine Quiz will be hosting a Mashup NOLA party and feature a revolving door of local musicians dropping by. The first lineup will include Derrick Freeman (Kermit Ruffins’ BBQ Swingers) on drums, Kirk Joseph playing tuba (Dirty Dozen Brass Band), saxophonist James Martin (Ernie Vincent), and guest MC M@Peoples. Plus, tickets are only be $9.
Future guests include members of Karl Denson, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, George Porter, Jr.’s Running Pardners, the Funky Meters, and Trombone Shorty’s New Orleans Ave. The shows will be 18+.
Now if only DJ Soul Sister can get in the mix…then we’d really be in business. Although, mashups, funk remixes and live instruments all pulsing at once may lead to some sort of overload/brain explosion. And nobody wants that.
Get out there.

Release notes for Road Trips Vol.4 No. 2 as written by Blair Jackson (Author of Garcia: An American Life, Grateful Dead Gear & Grateful Dead: The Music Never Stopped):
“You all know about the glory that was 1987. A year after we almost lost Jerry to his diabetic coma in the summer of ’86, the Dead were back, Jerry was the phoenix risen, and the band was bigger than ever: There was “Touch of Grey,” In the Dark, the stadium tour with Dylan, a huge influx of new Heads; it was good times all around, for sure. The band was revived and a new day dawned!
But when I interviewed Garcia for my old Dead ’zine, The Golden Road, the following autumn—1988—he revealed that he felt like he was just then finally catching up to his old, pre-coma self, “That is to say, having access to everything I know about playing. I’m getting to that point where it’s physically as comfortable… [and] feeling there.”
Indeed, 1988 was a fantastic year for the Dead, with some of the band’s most explosive and energetic playing, as the whole band rose to meet Garcia in his return to absolute peak form. This “high” washed over into 1989—a year that has been extensively documented with official releases in part because the band recorded so many shows on multi-track tape and multi-camera video (Downhill From Here, Truckin’, Up to Buffalo, Nightfall of Diamonds, the recent Formerly the Warlocks box). But 1988 has, curiously, been largely ignored, save for a single official download-only release many years ago of the epic 3/27/88 Hampton show. What gives? It’s certainly no reflection of the quality of the music from ’88, which most Dead Heads would agree was almost uniformly strong. You’ll find many folks singing the praises of runs at Kaiser, the Centrum, Irvine, Alpine, Frost, the Greek, Alpine, Oxford Plains in Maine, Laguna Seca… just solid stuff all around. Gets me tingly just thinkin’ about it!
Well, we haven’t forgotten ’88—far from it—and this edition of Road Trips (Vol. 4, No. 2) shows you why. It offers up the entire April 1, 1988 concert from the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, NJ (maybe you just called it “the Meadowlands” back in the day), plus the entire second set and a few first set highlights from the previous night’s show, March 31. That April Fools show is a real barn-burner, with a first set that includes a “double-opener” of high-octane versions of “Mississippi Half-Step” and “Jack Straw,” a rare and nearly perfect take on “To Lay Me Down” (played for just the second time since 1983), followed directly by the second (and final) GD-only version of Dylan’s “Ballad of a Thin Man.” Less than a year after their six-show jaunt with the Mysterious One, Weir & Co. give the classic tune an impressively emotional workout; in fact, it’s hard to discern why it didn’t remain in the Dead’s repertoire after this evening. That first set also includes nearly manic versions of both “Cumberland” and “Deal.” Blazing!
There’s no letup in Set Two, either, as the band tears through what looks on paper like a fairly conventional set list, but in execution is far from that. “China Cat” > “Rider,” “Estimated” > “Eyes” and “The Other One” > “Wharf Rat” all sound fresh and alive, and seem to glow with fiery embers thanks to Garcia’s speedy and imaginative runs—basically the guy is on fire!
A few nuggets from the 3/31 first set are tucked onto the back side of Disc One—including a superb “Let It Grow”—and then that night’s second set fills the other disc, and it’s another rockin’ affair loaded with favorites: A “Scarlet” > “Fire” nearly the equal of the famous Hampton version just four nights earlier, a fine “Terrapin,” and a post-“Drums” that never lets up as it moves from “Goin’ Down the Road” into “Miracle,” “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” the coda of “Hey Jude,” and “Watchtower” in the closing slot. The encore is another Dylan tune, “Heaven’s Door”—a perfect grace note for a raucous and exciting show. We should also note that the “Rhythm Devils” and “Space” portions of each show are also fantastically varied and interesting—in the spring of ’89 Garcia will be the last band member to “go MIDI,” so this is provides a glimpse of the more “pure” Garcia “Space” tones.
Intrigued? You should be! It’s hot stuff from beginning to end. As is customary, the original recordings (in this case by Dan Healy) have been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman, and our art team of Scott McDougall and Steve Vance have once again come up with a stunning package to entertain your eyeballs. This time out, Dead scribe Gary Lambert has contributed a splendid essay for the booklet, which true-to-form, is also loaded with period photos of The Boys in action. You can find the complete song lists for all three discs, plus ordering information simply by pressing this magic button! What a way to start the New Year!” - Blair Jackson
Where Have You Gone Secret Machines?
In this current hypersaturated music world, it's easy for past infatuations to fall by the wayside into an abyss of truly great bands you've forgotten about. There's too much coming at us now on a weekly basis, but every now and then, click on a particular year (preferably one with which you have fond musical/life memories),perhaps from when you were in college or high school and go back through the music that was soundtracking your life. For me, the years 2005 and 2006 were particularly formative for me as I stepped over the Maginot Line that once divided the jam and indie circles. These circles between hipsterdom and w00kdom are now more concentric than ever and bands like My Morning Jacket, Yo La Tengo, and the impetus for this writeup -- The Secret Machines -- helped encourage a number of fans like myself to cross the proverbial aisle (in more than a symbolic fashion a la this year's State of the Union b.s.) and embrace other worlds.
The Secret Machines were the perfect indie band to lure jam kids outside of the drum circles, fusing BIG psychedelic Pink Floyd progressions and wielding a Who-like largesse in their on-stage productions. The Dallas, TX trio had a short, but impressive output of material from their critically-acclaimed debut record The Road Leads Where It's Led from 2005 to their super-twisted self-titled third album under the name Secret Machines (dropping the the) in 2008. Arguably one of the finest live bands of the 2000s, it would be great to see Benjamin Curtis take a break from School of Seven Bells (albeit a solid band in itself) and return to play with his brother again down the road. These guys had something rare and special, so the moral of this post is basically...BRING THE SECRET MACHINES BACK!
Bonnaroo 2011 Lineup Rumors, Speculation - UPDATE 2.2.2011
Bonnaroooooooooooooooooo
Wanderlust abounds this time of year...
NOTE: New additions to rumor mill/speculation in Green, [Rumored] Confirmations will be in red.
The yearly celebration of Bonnaroo has been on the mind ever since the festival officially announced the dates for this June's 10th edition. The festival is expected announce it's lineup sometime next week (released in 2010 on 2/9). Not that the festival needs something like a big anniversary to pull out all the stops, but if the transformative 5th Anniversary was any indication (2006-- my personal favorite lineup, featuring Radiohead, Beck, My Morning Jacket, G.R.A.B., and Oysterhead), this year AC Entertainment and Superfly will be pulling out all the stops. If you need MORE BONNAROO in your life and/or a quick frame of reference of what the festival has been like in year's past, click this link for a timeline of the first 9 years of this incredible and unique event. Finally, here is my completely speculatory list of artists who I see as possibilities to appear on the farm in Manchester from June 9-12 (one can wish, wonder, and wander towards the Good Road):
NOTE: With regards to Radiohead returning for the first time since '06, I just don't see it happening but will pray to Gary Chardonnay nightly that I am proven wrong
Eminem (pretty confident he will be there this year)
Daft Punk (reportedly going back on tour this summer, on hiatus since 2007)
David Gilmour & Roger Waters (Appearing together at a mystery date on Roger Waters' The Wall Tour very soon, one can hope. One of these guys would more than suffice) and/or
U2 (making up their 360 Tour this summer, however, if Bonnaroo has a sturdy radius clause for headliners, I think this one is out of the question b/c of an early July show already scheduled at Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville. Could be wrong there but seems unlikely that Bonnaroo would sign on a headliner playing in the area a few weeks later).
Dr. John (Featuring the Original METERS) -- Not likely if unconfirmed this late in the game, but the festival gets it's name from a Dr. John song featuring the Meters as the backing band and it's been mentioned.
Red Hot Chili Peppers (Reportedly getting back together in '11 minus retired guitarist John Frusciante) or Elton John or David Bowie or Neil Young
Robert Plant and His Band of Joy (CONFIRMED)
Foo Fighters (hope not, but could see it happening with new album, heavy touring in '11. Would be a slight upgrade from KoL '10, Jack Johnson '08; appearing at the Hangout Fest a few weeks earlier, also rumored to be headlining Lollapalooza in August, so they are definitely putting themselves out there this summer -- 2/11/2011.
Gorillaz (reportedly putting out yet another album next year; also, Gorillaz are not breaking up)
Buffalo Springfield (Link to speculation in Nashville Examiner)
Lauryn Hill (performing at Jazz Fest for the first time in years)
Jack White w/ Danger Mouse (ROME project, being released in May)
Rush (Touring North America this Spring and Summer)
Paul Simon (Headlining Hangout Fest May 20-22, fairly likely I would think)
Jonsi
Dr. Dre w/ Guests (since Kanye in '08 and Jay-Z last year, it could make sense with Detox coming out early-2011). Performing at the Grammys.
Big Boi (a suggestive RT if there ever was one)
The Arcade Fire (headlining Jazz Fest and Coachella, would round out quite an unprecedented trifecta)
Furthur (No member of The Dead has played at Bonnaroo since 2008)
My Morning Jacket (set to release a new record in the first half of 2011, have not appeared at Bonnaroo since 2008, late night What or Which Stage would be likely, would literally be in a catatonic state of shock if the lineup is announced and MMJ is not on there.)
Black Keys (could be a select back-to-back choice)
Widespread Panic (also have not appeared since 2008, a long time for the band holding the record for most headlining appearances. Also, 2011 is the band's 25th Anniversary and last run until an indefinite hiatus)
Manu Chao (please bring back)
Avett Brothers (even though they were there last year, new album for 2011 just announced so could make a repeat visit).
Cee-Lo
Wanda Jackson w/ Jack White
Fleet Foxes
Black Star
The Faces
Rihanna
Lonely Island
Nicki Minaj
Robbie Robertson and Friends (New album out in 2011, first in 13 years)
The String Cheese Incident (have not done a proper tour since 2007 or appeared at Bonnaroo since that summer.)
The Avalanches
Wilco
Massive Attack
Gregg Allman and his Blues Band
Chemical Brothers
Wiz Khalifa
Dispatch
Zach Galifianakis (with Hangover 2 coming out weeks before, could be this year's big comedic headliner).

Lissie
STS9
Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi
A Tribe Called Quest
Umphrey's McGee

Some formation of Bob Dylan & Levon Helm

Bonnaroo 2002-2011 - Timeline with Video Highlights
With the lineup coming any day now (my guess is next Tuesday), take a look back at the first 9 Bonnaroos. I prepared this timeline for the 2010 Bonnaroo Preview for JamBase last year, and made some video additions. For the full story, go here.
Bonnaroo Timeline Through The Years - 2002-2011
2002: The inaugural festival sells out 70,000 tickets well in advance without the use of traditional advertising methods, relying on word-of-mouth and far exceeding the promoters' expectations. Widespread Panic plays one of its final concerts with late guitarist Michael Houser. Galactic's Robert Mercurio described the first 'Roo as having "something special about it, because people questioned how you can get 80,000 people in the woods and no one get hurt. It was unprecedented to have anything like that in the U.S." moe. plays a marathon late night set featuring special guests from The String Cheese Incident, Umphrey's McGee, The Disco Biscuits, and Robert Randolph. They would later be recognized for the show with a Jammy Award for "Concert of the Year".
Widespread Panic - Tall Boy > Testify w/ Dottie Peoples
2003: James Brown, Bob Dylan and Neil Young & Crazy Horse appear at the festival. Stages and tents renamed What, Which, This, That, and the Other, confusing Bonnaroo attendees ever since.
Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Cortez the Killer
2004: Two vicious electrical storms followed by an abnormally cold summer night at The Dead's set blow through Manchester causing several delays and turning Centeroo into a mud pit. Sets by Steve Winwood, a late night Umphrey's McGee set, David Byrne and the resurgence of the The Dead were highlights of the fest.
The Dead - Tennessee Jed (post-rain)
2005: Temperate weather and amazing late night sets by Galactic and Sound Tribe Sector 9 highlighted the '05 edition. The Cinema Tent debuts showing Mike Tyson's embarrassing 7-round TKO loss to Kevin McBride as chilled-out festival patrons enjoy the tent's air conditioning.
The Secret Machines - Late Night
2006: Mysterious smoke rings begin appearing in the Manchester skies and a turning of the tides begins. At the time, the addition of the iconic Radiohead was seen as a huge transition for the previously jam- centric festival, but this was just the beginning of a new era. Radiohead would play the longest show of their career and one that Thom Yorke still considers to be perhaps the band's best. G.R.A.B. (Trey, Mike & The Duo) are the surprise Superjam late night act and are joined by Phil Lesh for a few songs, including "Going Down the Road Feelin' Bad."
My Morning Jacket - The Bear (w/ Andrew Bird)
2007: The polarizing psychedelic hard rockers Tool are invited to headline, perplexing/angering Bonnaroo veterans and hippies. Many of these same fans go to the show and most become Tool fans. The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne lands his spaceship, distributes thousands of laser pointers and waxes on about the war in Iraq to thousands of starry-eyed fans. The String Cheese Incident play Which Stage late Friday as part of their Farewell Tour.
Tool - Lateralus (w/ Tom Morello)
2008: "FUCK KANYE" becomes a rallying cry after rapper Kanye West lobbies to get his "Glow in the Dark Tour" headlining set rescheduled to 2:45 a.m. and subsequently doesn't take the stage until 4:30 a.m. amidst twilight and boos. My Morning Jacket plays a cover-heavy set in the driving rain and almost no one leaves until the show's completion at 4:00 a.m. MMJ are joined by Jeff Coffin, Kirk Hammett and Zach Galifianakis, among others. "Best show ever" is a common sentiment amongst attendees (including yours truly).
Metallica - Fade To Black
2009: A dream fest for many, Phish finally headlines the festival playing a late night show on the main stage on Friday and closing out the festival on Sunday with Bruce Springsteen joining the band for "Mustang Sally," "Bobby Jean"and "Glory Days." Nine Inch Nails, moe., Yeasayer, and MGMT highlight one of the best late nights in the festival's history on Saturday.
Phish - Glory Days (w/ Bruce Springsteen)
2010: Jay-Z stakes his claim as the coolest person on the face of the Earth, commanding the astute attention of 60-70,000 people at the far-as-the-eye-can-see packed What Stage, putting on quite possibly the best headlining performance in Bonnaroo history (too tough to compare with the likes of Radiohead) and easily the biggest party. Flaming Lips perform "Dark Side of the Moon" in it's entirety on the Which Stage on Friday night. Conan O'Brien MC's the What Stage for two days and does a few shows in the Comedy Tent. Sunday was hot.
Jay-Z - Intro, Run This Town
2011: Unprecedented buzz leads up to the release of the 10th Anniversary Bonnaroo lineup. Lots of unsubstantiated talk of Arcade Fire, Widespread Panic, Daft Punk (wishful maybe?), Neil Young, Paul Simon and remaining members of Pink Floyd.

Interview with George Porter on Live Music Blog NOLA
The following interview appears here on Live Music Blog NOLA
Well it’s already February, 2011 is off and running strong here in the Big Easy and Live Music Blog: NOLA is ready to feature it’s first Artist of the Month ever. And who better to recognize first than master funksmith and all around nice guy George Porter Jr.? There are few more involved and tireless musicians in the Big Easy than Porter. At 63 years young, the bass legend and founding member of The Meters is still challenging himself with new projects like 7 Walkers and making new generations of fans all over the world (a trip to Australia is on the horizon for the funky Meters). The funky Meters will hit the road for a run up in Brooklyn later this month, but not before George Porter and the Runnin’ Pardners take to the stage next Friday night (February 11th) at Tipitina’s. Recently, LMB NOLA caught up with George Porter Jr. to talk about the Meters past and present, his solo work, Bonnaroo (including speculation about a Dr. John/original Meters reunion that has yet to materialize), JamCruise, and the long-time mystery of New Orleans music’s conspicuous absence (with exceptions of course) from mainstream radio airplay.
LMB: NOLA – When did you guys decide to go back out on the road up to Brooklyn and all the way over to Australia?
George Porter Jr. – It’s not so much when the band is available; it’s when dates come along. The band never took itself off the road. We’ve always had scheduling difficulties (for the funky Meters) because of The Neville Brothers. Art’s first priority was always to do shows with his family. If there was a thorn in the band’s side, that would’ve been it, the fact that The Neville Brothers dates took priority. Even though The Neville Brothers haven’t been out on the road for quite some time, the funky Meters have pretty much been available when I wasn’t out playing a bunch of dates with 7 Walkers and my solo band Runnin’ Pardners. So I’ve definitely been tryin’ to stay busy.
LMB NOLA- [Laughs] It sounds like you’re doing a good job of that.
George Porter Jr. – To answer your question, the band doesn’t really decide when it wants to go on the road, management and agencies decide if and when they’re gonna book us.
When was the last time you went down to play in Australia?
Last time I was there was in ’92 or ’93 when I was there with David Byrne and we did Australia and New Zealand.
You’ve recorded with a lot of bands and been a lot of places with all these acts, is there a foreign country that you feel has shown a larger appreciation for the New Orleans sound and/or the bands you’ve appeared with abroad?
Of all the places I’ve been to acting as a New Orleans-based band, I did Taste of New Orleans for a little while around Europe, and Runnin’ Pardners mostly only played in Holland. Also, the original Meters did some touring with the Rolling Stones in ’76...

The White Stripes Break Up
As quickly as they rose to a level of stadium rock anthem superstardom, the band has vanished into the history books. Officially announcing on Groundhog Day that their career was over.
The reason:
To preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.
Here's hoping that they don't return and live out this promise to restore what has been a amazing, influential, brief and prolific career. Something tells me they'll be at Bonnaroo 2020 though as a 'nostalgia act.' I sure hope not, but I'd still be excited.

2011 Hangout Music Festival Lineup Announcement
Read this post in full at LMB: NOLA
Only 190 miles and 107 days separate those in New Orleans from the 2nd Annual Hangout Music Festival, and this year’s edition is a massive step up from last year’s already strong debut lineup. Over the long weekend, you might get to see Paul Simon singing “Under African Skies” on the beach, Yim Yames playing “Golden” by the shore and maybe Primus doing Sailing Through the Seas of Cheese in it’s entirety, these things can all be yours for the price of a 3-day band (ok, the last one is a huge stretch). Judging by the lineup and setting, it looks like musical transcendence will not be in short supply come late-May in coastal Alabama...
Paul Simon
My Morning Jacket
Widespread Panic
Black Keys
Primus...
